Isla Mujeres Catamaran from Playa del Carmen: Day, Fees, Pickup

An Isla Mujeres catamaran is the classic boat day near Playa del Carmen, but every one of them sails from Cancún, not from Playa. That means a drive of about 73 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes, before the sails go up. The best all-in option we list, Isla Mujeres: Catamaran Day with Pickup in Playa del Carmen, runs 10 hours door to door and costs $89 plus a $25 fee paid in cash on the day. It is one of the island days compared in our Playa del Carmen boat tour guide, and this page shows what that money buys.

Quick answer

There is no catamaran to Isla Mujeres leaving from Playa del Carmen. Every catamaran day starts from a Cancún pier or marina, so from Playa you add a drive of about 73 km, around 1 hour 10 minutes, before boarding. The simplest fix is a tour that picks you up in Playa: Isla Mujeres: Catamaran Day with Pickup in Playa del Carmen costs $89 per person plus a $25 dock tax and environmental fee in cash, for a 10-hour day with snorkel gear, buffet and open bar. Going on your own by bus and public ferry is cheaper but you lose the sailing, the reef stop and the open bar.

Why Every Catamaran Leaves from Cancún

The geography

Isla Mujeres sits about 13 km off the coast, roughly level with Cancún rather than Playa del Carmen. The island is about 7 km long and 650 m wide, and the deep water channel that catamarans cross runs from the Cancún side. Playa del Carmen points toward Cozumel instead, which is why the catamaran fleet for Isla Mujeres is based in Cancún.

If a listing says Isla Mujeres and your hotel is in Playa, assume there is a road transfer built in, because no boat crosses from Playa to Isla Mujeres.

Where the boats leave from

The public departure points in Cancún are well documented. Ultramar runs ferries from Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas on Boulevard Kukulcán km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5, all arriving at the APIQROO terminal in Isla Mujeres. El Embarcadero by Xcaret, at km 4.5 of the same boulevard, is another Hotel Zone departure pier.

Catamaran operators use their own marinas, and the tour we list does not name its marina publicly, so you get the exact meeting point after booking.

What the drive means for your day

Playa del Carmen to the Cancún Hotel Zone is about 73 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by car on Highway 307, and about an hour to Puerto Juárez. That transfer is exactly why the full day with pickup in Playa del Carmen runs 10 hours: part of that is the road, not the water. Build your evening around it, because you will get back to Playa after dark.

If you would rather skip the boat and make your own way, our bus and ferry route guide covers the do-it-yourself version.

How the Day Runs

A typical catamaran itinerary

Operators publish a similar rhythm, and one Cancún departure that documents it hour by hour looks like this: pickup around 7:00, check-in at 8:30, departure at 9:00, a snorkel stop at the El Meco reef at 9:30, land at a dock in Isla Mujeres town at 10:40, free time on the island from 11:00 to 2:15 in the afternoon, then re-board at 2:30 with music on the way back and arrival at the pier at 3:45. That whole cycle takes 6-7 hours before any road transfer. Catamaran days from the larger operators follow the same bones: sail, snorkel, island, party sail home.

What the tour we list includes

Isla Mujeres: Catamaran Day with Pickup in Playa del Carmen compresses all of that into one booking with the transfer handled. The card lists an open bar with more than 14 different cocktails on board, rum, vodka, tequila and beer, plus use of snorkeling equipment, a buffet meal with drinks, and an air-conditioned vehicle for the ride north. It runs 10 hours and takes up to 35 guests, with adults from age 11, children 3 to 10 and infants 0 to 2.

Photos and tips are not included. The table below splits the inclusions from the extras.

What You Pay

The real cost of the catamaran day

The headline price for the catamaran day with Playa pickup is $89 per person. On top of that the operator charges a dock tax and environmental sanitation fee of $25 per person, paid in cash on the day, so plan $114 per adult all in before tips, photos or drinks on the island. Children pay a reduced rate by age band.

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund, which matters here because the port captain closes Cancún ports in high wind and tours cancel in bad weather.

ItemCost
Catamaran day with pickup in Playa del Carmen$89 per person
Dock tax and environmental fee (cash, on the day)$25 per person
Marine park conservation wristband, official rate$6.88 (125 MXN) per person per day
Ultramar public ferry Cancún to Isla Mujeres, adult one way (reference)$15.96 (290 MXN)
Free cancellation deadline24 hours before departure

Why there is always a fee

Separate dock and park charges are normal on this route, not a scam. Ultramar's own fares page states that the fare does not include the dock fee that must be paid at Playa Caracol, and private catamaran charters on Isla Mujeres likewise list the Cancún dock fee as excluded from the charter price. The official public fee for the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc marine park is 125 MXN per person per day, the Brazalete de la Conservación, with reported exemptions for under 12s, seniors and disabled visitors and a 50% student and teacher discount. Anything an operator charges above that park wristband is their own marina and dock charge, so always read the exclusions before you compare prices.

On the Island

Playa Norte and the reef

Playa Norte, on the northern tip, is the island's famous beach, with white sand and shallow water that stays calm well out from shore. Most catamaran days snorkel a reef on the crossing or just off the island, with a certified guide in the water and gear provided. The reefs around here are part of the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc national marine park, declared by decree on 19 July 1996 and covering 8,673 hectares.

Your $25 day fee and the park wristband both tie back to that protected water.

MUSA, the underwater museum

Off the Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc side sits MUSA, the Museo Subacuático de Arte, which opened on 26 November 2010. Sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and Mexican artists placed hundreds of sculptures on the seabed, planned as 12 galleries with about 1,364 artificial habitats built to draw divers and snorkelers away from natural reef and give coral something to grow on. Gallery sites include Manchones on the Isla Mujeres side and Punta Nizuc.

Some catamaran itineraries pass these waters, and dedicated MUSA snorkel trips run separately if the museum is your priority.

Town, golf carts and free time

Most tours drop you in Isla Mujeres town for an hour or two of free time. The center and Playa Norte are walkable, so a golf cart is rarely needed on a catamaran day. If you do rent one, the rules are strict: drivers must be 18 or older with a license left as deposit, zero alcohol tolerance, and carts are banned from beaches, the malecón, the Caribbean side, unpaved roads, Avenida Hidalgo and the airport strip.

Yellow-painted kerbs mean no parking. Taxis and mopeds cover the rest. If you want a second island day that includes wilder country, look at the Isla Contoy bird island trip instead of staying in town.

Isla Mujeres Catamaran Questions

Can you take a catamaran to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen?

No catamaran sails that route from Playa. Isla Mujeres sits about 13 km off the coast level with Cancún, so the catamaran fleet leaves from Cancún marinas and Hotel Zone piers. From Playa del Carmen you either take a tour that includes road transport north, like the catamaran day with Playa pickup, or you travel by ADO bus to Cancún and board the public ferry, which our route guide walks through step by step.

How long is the catamaran ride to Isla Mujeres?

The crossing itself is short, typically under an hour of sailing time from a Cancún marina. Published itineraries show departure around 9:00, a snorkel stop at the reef, and landfall in Isla Mujeres town a bit after 10:30. What stretches the day is the road: the drive from Playa del Carmen to the Cancún Hotel Zone is about 73 km and around 1 hour 10 minutes, so a full tour day from Playa runs 10 hours door to door.

What is included in an Isla Mujeres catamaran tour?

The day we list includes air-conditioned transport from Playa del Carmen, an open bar with more than 14 cocktails on board including rum, vodka, tequila and beer, snorkeling equipment, and a buffet meal with drinks. Not included are the $25 per person dock tax and environmental fee paid in cash on the day, plus tips and photos. The group caps at 35 guests, and children from age 3 pay a child rate.

Do you pay a dock fee on Isla Mujeres tours?

Yes, and it is standard practice, not a hidden trick. The tour we list charges $25 per person for the dock tax and environmental sanitation fee, paid in cash on the day. The official marine park wristband for the Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc national park is 125 MXN per person per day, so anything above that covers the operator's marina and dock charges. Ultramar's ferry page notes the same practice at Playa Caracol.

Is the Isla Mujeres catamaran worth it compared with the public ferry?

It depends on what you want from the day. The catamaran adds the sailing, a guided reef snorkel, an open bar, a buffet and music on the return, all with hotel pickup handled, for $89 plus the $25 fee. The public ferry is far cheaper at $15.96 (290 MXN) each way but gives you none of that and still needs a bus to Cancún. If the boat day is the point of the trip, the catamaran earns its price.

What should I bring on the catamaran day?

Bring a swimsuit, towel, sun protection you can reapply, a change of clothes and cash. The cash matters most: the $25 per person dock tax and environmental fee on the tour we list is collected in cash on the day, and you will want pesos or dollars for souvenirs, tips and anything extra on the island. Biodegradable sunscreen is the responsible choice since the snorkel reefs sit inside a national marine park.

Is the catamaran suitable for children?

Yes on the tour we list, with age bands of infant 0 to 2, child 3 to 10 and adult from 11. The open bar is adults only, and the group maxes at 35, which keeps the deck manageable for families. Note the day is long, 10 hours including the road transfer, so very young children may fade before the return sail. If you would rather skip the alcohol-forward format, a self-guided ferry day lets you set your own pace.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The port captain closes Cancún's ports in high wind, and catamaran tours cancel when that happens. The tour we list offers a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure, so book your day early in your trip rather than at the end. That leaves room to move the outing if a cold front or a port closure forces a change, which is common enough on this coast to plan around.

The easiest Isla Mujeres day from Playa is the catamaran with pickup in Playa del Carmen: $89 plus the $25 cash fee, with the drive, the reef stop, lunch and the open bar handled.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before leaves room to move the day if a cold front closes the port.
